The Multiplier Effect: Why Referral Partners Matter More in Europe Than You'd Expect

Why relationships with VCs, law firms, and accelerators are a higher-leverage growth channel in Europe than most non-European companies realize.

Companies entering Europe from outside tend to default to the growth channels that worked at home, paid acquisition, outbound, inbound content. Those channels still work, but they consistently underweight one of the highest-leverage paths into the European B2B ecosystem: relationships with the people who are already trusted advisors to the companies you want as customers.

Why this matters more here than in a lot of home markets

European B2B decision making, particularly in markets like DACH and France, often runs through tighter, more relationship-dependent networks than a purely digital-first GTM motion accounts for. Venture firms, law firms, and accelerators that work closely with growth-stage companies are frequently the first call a founder or leadership team makes when they are evaluating a new vendor or expansion partner. That makes those firms an outsized source of qualified, trust-transferred introductions, if you have actually built the relationship rather than just added them to a partner page.

What a real multiplier relationship looks like, versus a nominal one

A logo on a partnerships page is not a multiplier relationship. A multiplier relationship is one where the VC, law firm, or accelerator contact genuinely understands what you do well enough to make a specific, credible introduction, not a generic one. That requires investing time in the relationship before you need anything from it, understanding what their portfolio companies or clients actually struggle with, and being useful to them independent of whether it produces an introduction.

Building this kind of network takes patience most companies are not used to applying to a growth channel. It does not show up in a weekly pipeline report the way paid spend does. But a single well-placed introduction from a trusted advisor routinely outperforms weeks of colder outbound, because the trust transfer does most of the work a cold email would otherwise have to do from scratch.

    Where to start

Rather than trying to build broad partner coverage immediately, identify the handful of firms already embedded with companies that look like your actual ideal customer profile. Depth with a small number of genuinely engaged partners beats a long list of nominal ones every time. This is slower to build than a paid channel, and considerably more durable once it exists.
